Christopher CROSS

BIOGRAPHY - 1994

Christopher CROSS was born May 3, 1951 in San Antonio Military Hospital, Texas. Since both his parents worked at U.S. military hospital, Christopher spent his early childhood days moving from cities around the world. From age of 5 to 9, he lived in Tokyo, Japan. Those were the days when baseball and cowbioy and running around in the dirt with kids on the block seemed far more interesting than music, per se.

As he turned 12, The BEATLES came along. Out of the blue they came and quickly charmed Chris with this exciting music called Rock 'N' Roll. "I want to be like them. Play drums, guitar and make music..."
Around this time, he wrote his very first song. By this time, his family had settled down in San Antonio and so did Chris. He found his place in Rock 'N' Roll group. In the early '70s, he joined a local band called FLASH, playing support for visiting international bands, such as DEEP PURPLE, ZZ TOP and LED ZEPPELIN.

For a while, Christopher seemed as if he had traded his love of music for academy as he took Premedical Course at university, but music was too fun to give up. He formed a quartet with Rob MEURER, Andy SALMON, Tommy TAYLOR and by 1973, they were carrying on an extensive club circuit in Texas.

On Oct. 31, 1978, Christopher took the stage of Alamo Road House in Austin, clad in Halloween costume and make-up. In the audience was an A&R of Warner Bros., who had heard him sing and signed him right away on the spot. As history proves, it was not a trick, but a treat!

January 1980, recording artist Christopher CROSS was born.

Christopher CROSS self title debut CHRISTOPHER CROSS yielded four Top 20 singles for this anonymous new artist. Debut single Ride Like The Wind was just a spot short of #1, but the followup Sailing duly topped the Chart, followed by Never Be The Same (#15) and Say You'll Be Mine (#20). The album sold over 3 million in The U.S.A. alone, and over 5 million worldwide. Record-breaking five grammies went to this new artist that year.
Those were :
- Record Of The Year: Sailing,
- Album Of The Year: Christopher CROSS,
- Song Of The Year: Sailing,
- Best New Artist
- and Best Song Arrangement: Sailing.

Fall of 1981, a theme song from the motion picture soundtrack ARTHUR was dominating the Charts of the world. Co-penned by Christopher CROSS / Burt BACHARACH / Carole Bayer SAGER, Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do), won him an Oscar bronze for Best Soundtrack at 1982 Academy Award and accelerated his growing popularirt all over the world.

Summer of 1982, music fans were talking enthusiastically about this new, one-off producer project; Quincy JONES and Christopher CROSS who had produced ALESSI.
It was the prelude of Christopher's various session works to follow.
Chris guested on: Donna SUMMER, Michael McDONALD, AMERICA, Brenda RUSSELL, etc.

In 1983, he released his second album ANOTHER PAGE followed by EVERY TURN OF THE WORLD (1985), BACK OF MY MIND (1988). He has been to Japan twice for concerts tour.
