The Fort of La Roque Gageac
One of the most beautiful panoramas in Périgord Noir
Welcome to Fort de La Roque Gageac
Fort de la Roque Gageac is an ancient 12th-century medieval fortification 120m above the Dordogne River, offering an exceptional 180° panoramic view over the valley.
Built into the rock, the Fort was an elaborate defensive site. You'll discover a moat, a stunner, a parapet walk, archways, loopholes and gunports.
Partially collapsed in 2010, the site has undergone 10 years of major consolidation and safety work.
Jean-Max TOURON, who is passionate about troglodytism, prehistory and the Middle Ages, has decided to restore and develop the site in autumn 2019.
The Fort de la Roque Gageac today unveils an exhibition showcasing the great figures of the past and the great historical deeds of La Roque-Gageac.
At the end of a vertiginous ascent, you'll discover a natural cavity and 18 columns supporting the vault, which serve as the backdrop for the Fort's exhibition.
3D reconstruction of the fortress:
A commented video presents for the first time a 3D reconstruction of the fortress of la Roque-Gageac in the Middle Ages. The result of a never-before-conducted historical and archaeological study, this video offers a true immersion into the glorious 15th-century past and the exceptional natural setting of la Roque-Gageac.
She guides you from the banks of the Dordogne to the Château de l'Evêque, before taking you into the heart of the troglodyte fort, a unique witness to this forgotten history.
