Welcome to the Fort of La Roque Gageac
The Fort of La Roque Gageac is an ancient medieval fortification from the 12th century overlooking the Dordogne River and offering an exceptional 180° panorama over the valley. You will reach the Fort by a vertiginous staircase on the cliffside.
Built into the rock, the fort was a very elaborate defensive site. You will discover a moat, a stunner, a walkway, archways, loopholes and gun ports.
Partially collapsed in 2010, the site has undergone 10 years of major consolidation and safety work.
Jean-Max TOURON, who is passionate about troglodytism, prehistory and the Middle Ages, has decided to undertake the rehabilitation and development of the site in autumn 2019.
The Fort of La Roque Gageac is now unveiling an exhibition presenting the great figures of the past and the historical achievements of La Roque-Gageac.
At the end of a vertiginous ascent, you will discover a natural cavity and 18 columns supporting the vault, which provide the backdrop for the exhibition presenting the Fort.
New in 2021:
A commented video presents for the first time a 3D reconstruction of the fortress of La Roque-Gageac in the Middle Ages. The result of a never-before-conducted historical and archaeological study, this video offers a real immersion into the glorious past of the 15th century and the exceptional natural setting of La Roque-Gageac.
It guides you from the banks of the Dordogne to the Château de l'Evêque, before taking you to the heart of the troglodytic fort, a unique witness to this forgotten history.
