Villefranche du Périgord
A bastide in the Chestnut Country
Villefranche du Périgord
This Bastide, the oldest of the Périgord is renowned for its famous market with porcini mushrooms in season and its chestnuts.
Village of the south of Périgord Noir, in the country of the medieval Bastide and city, on the border of the lot and the lot-et-Garonne.
In the confines of Périgord, Quercy and Haut Agenis, the bastide of Villefranche-du-Périgord, ordered by Alphonse de Poitiers, brother of Saint Louis, was founded by the steward Guillaume de Barriols and received his franchise charter in 1261. After many vicissitudes, through wars and then religious events, it came as we know it at the dawn of the twenty-first century.
