Grotte du grand Roc
An exceptional jewel of concretions in the Dordogne
Welcome to the Grand Roc cave
Discovered by Jean Maury on April 29, 1924, the Grand Roc caves were built and opened to visitors in 1927. They open halfway up an impressive cliff overlooking the Vézère valley at Les Eyzies.
Here, the amazed onlooker walks through a veritable mineral forest, with an incredible variety and density of crystallizations rarely matched in other caves. Calcite flows carpet the floor in places. From the ceiling hang stalactites, sometimes fine, sometimes imposing and translucent. From the floor, stalagmites sometimes join to form columns. There are also many eccentrics and draperies, highlighted by light that intensifies the colors of the concretions. A few dozen meters away, visit the Laugerie Basse shelters.
Take advantage of the Laugerie Basse shelters a few yards away to enrich your children's visit with workshops on "Animals and prehistoric hunting" and "Cro-Magnon the architect".
