Font de Gaume cave

One of the world's most beautiful Paleolithic sanctuaries

Font de Gaume

Unesco World Heritage Site since 1979, Font-de-Gaume is an ornate cave, and one of the world's finest Paleolithic sanctuaries still open to the public. It contains over two hundred painted or engraved figurations, often polychrome, of bison, horses, mammoths and reindeer...

It was on September 12, 1901, three days after the Combarelles cave, that Font-de-Gaume was discovered and recognized by Denis Peyrony, Abbé Breuil and Louis Capitan. However, the cave was already known to the locals and was used as a playground for children.
The first visits by prehistorians revealed over 180 different engraved or painted figures. This was a real event, as it was the first discovery of a cave decorated with polychrome cave paintings in Périgord.

For conservation reasons, the number of visitors admitted each day is very limited and subject to change each day. Online booking is compulsory at www. sites-les-eyzies.fr, with a limit of 13 people per visit to Font-de-Gaume.

You can now take a virtual tour the font de Gaume cave on the website http://font-de-gaume.monuments-nationaux.fr/fr/

Please note: the cave is not accessible to people with motor disabilities.
