Cave Font de Gaume

One of the most beautiful Paleolithic shrines in the world

Font of Gaume

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site Since 1979, Font-de-Gaume is an ornate cave, and one of the most beautiful Paleolithic sanctuaries in the world still open to the public. It houses more than two hundred figurations, painted or engraved, often polychrome, of bison, horses, mammoths and reindeer...

This is September 12, 1901, three days after the cave of Combarelles, that font-de-Gaume is discovered and recognized by Denis Peyrony, Abbé Breuil and Louis Capitan. The cave was however already known by the inhabitants of the area and served as playground for the children.
The first visits of the Prehistorians make it possible to count more than 180 different engraved or painted figures. This is a real event as it is the first discovery of a cave adorned with polychrome rock paintings of the Périgord.

For Conservatory reasons, the number of visitors admitted daily is very limited and subject to change every day. It is not possible to book your visit (with the exception of visits adapted to the public in a handicap situation).
