National Museum of Prehistory
More than 18,000 pieces in a completely new museography
Welcome to the National Museum of Prehistory
Housed in the former château of Les Eyzies de Taillac since 1911, embedded in the cliff overlooking the village. The National Prehistory Museum is a reference point for prehistorians and visitors alike.
It is located in the heart of the Vézère valley, known as the Valley of Man, close to some of the world's greatest prehistoric sites, which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. The museum houses exceptional collections that retrace over 400 millennia of human history.
The Musée national de la préhistoire is a lively place, welcoming archaeologists, students and researchers from all over the world. Throughout the year, a succession of conferences are open to the public, students and schoolchildren.
It's not set in stone, with a succession of temporary and virtual exhibitions. Discover the agenda of the national museum of prehistory here
Groups can visit the museum with their own guides, or on their own. All they have to pay is the admission fee. If you wish to visit the museum with your own guide, you must inform the museum and request a speaking fee.
The museum also offers tours led by a national museum lecturer in French or English. These tours can be general or thematic, or present current exhibitions.
