Truffle Ecomuseum
Unlock the mysteries of the black diamond
Welcome to the Truffle Museum
Sorges is the natural home of the truffle eco-museum. Indeed, Sorges, a small town to the north-east of Périgueux, is known as the truffle capital of France, since it was here at the end of the 19th century that truffle cultivation began, and that this fungus, made available by nature to gatherers, began to be tamed to become a real cultivated product.
On the road between Périgueux and Limoges (the RN21), you won't want to miss it, with ample parking facilities.
The truffle eco-museum is housed in a restored 18th-century farmhouse. The museum explains the truffle, from its birth in symbiosis with the roots of oak trees, to its harvesting with trained dogs or flies, to its tasting on the tables of the world's greatest Michelin-starred chefs. The museum itself is upstairs, while on the first floor there's a store dedicated to truffles and regional products.
To complete your visit, take a stroll along the discovery trail through the limestone causse of the region, discovering the flora and fauna particular to truffle fields.
The visit is free, but can also be guided for groups.
At the right time of year, you can take part in a cavage demonstration, i.e. finding and digging up truffles.
Tastings are available all year round, subject to reservation.
