Château de Fénelon
Feudal fortress of the Périgord Noir
Fénelon castle
Feudal fortress of the Périgord Noir
Set in a double enclosure, the Fénelon castle with its lauze roof, rises to a mighty silhouette above the Dordogne valley. It is unquestionably one of the finest châteaux in Périgord. It was the birthplace of François de Salignac de la Mothe Fénelon (1651-1715), archbishop of Cambrai, tutor to the Children of France and author of the "Adventures of Telemachus". Built on a succession of rocky terraces, it skilfully blends the warlike character of the Middle Ages with the elegance of the Renaissance.
Fénelon is one of the few monuments in the Sarlat region to retain its lauze roof. You can admire a collection of arms and armor, fine furniture and objets d'art from the 15th to 18th centuries. Free, shaded parking.
Allow 1 hour to 1 h 30 for a complete self-guided tour (exterior and interior).
