Le Manoir de Gisson classified as a historic monument, is located in the heart of the old town of Sarlat on the Place des oies, it's the only one you'll be able to enter.
The Manoir de Gisson consists of two architecturally distinct buildings linked by a hexagonal staircase tower, dating back to the 13th century. Its mullioned windows (ashlar crosspieces dividing the windows), its roofs of lauze (a local flat stone), its very singular colonnette bay surmounted by oculi (small round openings), its facades flanked by decorated portals and its noble tower embourgeoisize this building.
Perfectly restored and elegantly furnished, the Gisson manor house is designed to introduce you to the life of Sarlat's upper middle class during the Renaissance.
Your visit will take place in two stages: the consul's apartments and the vaulted cellars housing a cabinet of curiosities.
The consul's apartments:
The de Gisson family lived in this fifteen-room manor house, and its members were royal notaries, lawyers and even town consuls, dragoon captains and knights of the Royal Order of Saint-Louis.
The private apartments of the former occupants are richly decorated. You'll discover magnificent state rooms, Haute Époque furniture, fireplaces, precious wood panelling and parquet flooring, adobe floors, a spiral staircase and a large terrace overlooking Place des Oies and the narrow streets of the old town.
The cabinet of curiosities
The cabinet of curiosities was a room where the collector kept rare objects brought back from expeditions to the four corners of the world. They were very fashionable during the Renaissance, as corners of science and discovery. Here, the atmosphere of the vaulted cellars makes the most of the objects collected here and there.
