Le Manoir de Gisson
The world of the Sarlatan bourgeoisie in the 17th century
Welcome to the Manoir de Gisson
The Manor of Gisson is located in the heart of the old town of Sarlat on the Goose Square, it is the only one you can enter.
The manor house of Gisson is composed of two buildings of distinct architecture which are connected to each other by a hexagonal staircase tower, the origins of this building date back to the 13th century. Its mullioned windows (ashlar braces dividing the windows), its roofs of lauze (a local flat stone), its very singular bay with columns topped by oculi (small round openings), its facades flanked by decorated portals and its tower of nobility embourgeoisise this building.
Perfectly restored and very elegantly furnished, the Gisson manor house aims to make you discover the life of the high bourgeoisie of Sarlat during the renaissance period.
Your visit will take place in two stages: the consul's flats and the vaulted cellars which house a cabinet of curiosities
The consul's flats:
The de Gisson family lived in this fifteen-room manor house and its members were royal notaries, lawyers and even consul of the town, dragoon captains and knights of the royal order of Saint-Louis.
The private flats of the former occupants are richly decorated. You will discover the magnificent state rooms, the Haute Époque furniture, the fireplaces, the precious wood panelling and parquet floors, the adobe floors, the spiral staircase and the large terrace overlooking the Place des Oies and the narrow streets of the old town.
The cabinet of curiosity
The cabinet of curiosities was a room where the collector kept rare objects, brought back from expeditions to the four corners of the world. They were very fashionable during the Renaissance, they were corners of science and discovery. Here the atmosphere of the vaulted cellars fully enhances the objects collected here and there.
