Moulin à Papier de la Rouzique
Discover the secrets of artisanal papermaking!
Welcome to the econo-museum of the paper of Couze and Saint Front
Couze and Saint-Front, the cradle of papermaking in the South West, is a small village on the banks of the Dordogne that was home to as many as 13 paper mills on the banks of the river Couze at the end of the 18th century. Today, three of them have retained their papermaking vocation. Among them, the Moulin de La Rouziquewhich today has become thePaper rag museum.
The paper mill of La Rouzique has existed since 1530 and operated until 1983 in a craft and then semi-industrial way.
Today, La Rouzique is a place to welcome the public (schoolchildren, families, groups, trainees...), but also a place of production, experimentation...
During your visit, the guide will retrace with you the history of the place and the stages of paper making through the different rooms by setting in motion different mechanisms of the mill (models, paddle wheel, round machine ...). In your turn, come and activate the paddle wheel and discover a know-how by making your own sheet of paper!
At the end of your visit, observe a rich collection of watermarks, some of which date back to the Middle Ages! A scenography allows young and old alike to get to know this motif obtained with the help of a metallic thread embroidered on the surface of the tool which, by transparency, serves to identify the sheet of paper.
You will discover the gestures of handmade paper making through visits, demonstrations and workshops. Also, days of meetings with paper artisans are offered throughout the year.
The Rouzique mill is a resolutely lively place open to creations and certain functional tools can be made available to paper craftsmen.
Le Moulin has a shop for lovers of paper and stationery. You will find a whole range of handmade papers to make your artistic creations.
