Rouzique Paper Mill
Discover the secrets of handmade paper!
Welcome to the Couze et Saint Front paper museum
Couze et Saint-Front, the cradle of papermaking in the South-West, is a small village on the banks of the Dordogne that was home to as many as 13 paper mills on the banks of the Couze in the late 18th century. Today, three of them have retained their paper-making vocation. They include Moulin de La Rouziquenow theÉcono-musée du papier chiffon.
The La Rouzique paper mill has been in existence since 1530, operating until 1983 on a small-scale and then semi-industrial basis.
Today, La Rouzique not only welcomes the public (schools, families, groups, trainees...), but is also a place for production, experimentation...
During your visit, the guide will take you through the history of the site and the various stages of paper manufacture, setting the mill's various mechanisms in motion (models, paddle wheel, round form machine, etc.). You, in turn, can operate the paddle wheel and discover the skills involved in making your own sheet of paper!
At the end of your visit, take a look at a rich collection of watermarks, some of which date back to the Middle Ages! A scenography allows young and old alike to learn more about this motif obtained by embroidering a metallic thread on the surface of the tool, which, by transparency, serves to identify the sheet of paper.
Discover how handmade paper is made with tours, demonstrations and workshops. There are also days of meetings with paper craftsmen throughout the year.
The Moulin de la Rouzique is a lively place, open to new creations, and certain functional tools can be made available to paper craftsmen.
Le Moulin has a store for paper and stationery enthusiasts. You'll find a whole range of handmade papers for your artistic creations.
